Fuerteventura is without doubt the most unspoilt of the Canary Islands. You can immerse yourself in the blue waters on miles of sandy beaches or drive out to explore some of the oldest volcanoes of the region.
Fuerteventura is the closest Canary island to Africa. It is about 70 miles long and 20 miles at it's widest point and covers 668 square miles with a population of just over 70,000 (about 38people per sq mile!)
The north of the island is more popular with the British while the Germans seem to favour the resorts in the south.
Corralejo in particular is often visited by Spanish from the mainland.
Lanzarote is only a 15 minute boat trip and leaves Corralejo on the hour through out the day.
The latitude of the islands places them in a subtropical zone, the same as Orlando,Delhi and Kuwait, the climate however is different . You get hot temperatures, 2800 hours of sunshine each year, but are kept cool by gentle breezes, making it great for children, they don't get too hot and irritable! The average temperature is 25c. Rain is scarce.
The Local Resort of Corralejo
Corralejo still has the charm of the old spanish town together with the newer attractions. There are a host of bars and restaurants catering for a wide range of tastes. . If you like to shop you will find plenty to choose from particularly the fantastic range of surf ware clothes, favorite of ours. There is a market held every Monday and Friday mornings
The harbour is great for restaurants and surround the town beach, great for eating at night if you have young children you can keep an eye on them playing on the beach whilst you sit in the pavement restaurants, you may even get to eat at the same time!
Here you can book boat trips, diving, snorkeling or even get a ferrie to Lanzaroute ,they leave on the hour.
There is a new water park opened in 2005 which is a brilliant day out and is about 4mins by car from the Villa. This complex also includes a bowling alley, driving range and shops.
Getting Around
Fuerteventura has many natural beauties to discover, deserted sandy beaches, unspoilt fishing villages and sacred mountains. It's worth hiring a car, they are relatively cheap and it's a great way to wander of and discover the islands many hidden delights.
However it's not essential as taxi’s are available into Corralejo at a charge of approx 4 Euros. There is also a regular bus service into Corralejo with the bus stop across the road from the security gate and costs 1 Euro.
Gong south it is definitely worth checking out the Zoo in La Lajita, set in a tropical oasis there are more than 200 species of birds, a range of animals and the popular reptile and seal lion shows were a hit with our children.
Kite surfing and Windsurfing.
Fuerteventura offers a good mix of conditions that can suit the complete beginner to the seasoned pro. the best months for wind are June though to September during which you can be almost guaranteed some strong north winds that provide the ideal conditions. there are a number of surf schools which cater for all skill levels.

Fuerteventura has some of the most glorious beaches in the world, miles upon miles of long sandy beaches all within easy reach of the Villa.
The local town beach (5 mins drive) is situated adjacent to Corralejo harbour and seldom becomes crowded, shops and restaurants are close by, handy if you want to sit with a cool drink in the shade while your children play on the beach. We found this to be bliss when our children were very young we could actually eat a meal together without taking turns!
